17th Matsushima Cup Gunma Kyokushin Karate Tournament

2009/9/13 (Sun.) the 17th Matsushima Cup Gunma Prefecture Kyokushin Karate Tournament commenced in the #2 Isozaki City Gym. The kumite division this tournament was divided into 8 categories, 70 matches total: Non-student, Middle school, Kindergarten/1st grade, 2nd grade, 3rd grade, 4th grade, 5th grade, and 6th grade. The kata division was divided into: Elementary, Female, and Middle. The Middle school division was conducted in a different court simultaneously. Just like the previous year, non-student, Middle, and children’s division participants were welcomed from the Ibaragi and Chiba Branches, adding heat to the participants and spectators.
Katas division Elementary: Imaizumi Hisao (Sho Dan) [1st Dan]
Middle School Division: Ogawara Yuu (Sho Dan)
Female Division: Ishihara Kaori (Sho Dan)
Each was crowned winners. Ishihara was able to claim her second consecutive win. In the elementary and middle school kumite divisions, dramatic moves like Tobi-Geris and Mawashi-Geris were seen intensifying the atmosphere. In the non-student division, the champion, Hayashi, experiencing a winning streak for the second year, and the runner-up Yoshino have the same build, are from the same Dojo and the same mindset.

【Kumite Male Division, Final】
Yoshino Keiichi V.S Hayashi Hidetoshi
Fellow students of the Numata Dojo, both made it to the finals again this year. It became a tense fight with each keeping their distance. Hayashi lashes out a powerful Gedan-Geri-Jodan-Geri combination. Yoshino responds by tossing in tricky moves like Tobi-Ushiro-Mawashi-Geri. Being from the same dojo, both evade easy attacks with slight movements. When one tosses an unreadable attack, the other responds in kind. An intense battle of reading each other’s moves. Yoshino is the first to attack. He pushes the big Hayashi back further and further with Tsuki and Hiza-Geri. Hayashi responds with an irregularly timed Jo-Dan Mawashi-Geri, but Yoshino is like running water and leans back just enough to avoid it. Yoshino does an Uchi-Mawashi-Geri that ends flat. Hayashi, who carefully aimed for effective areas like the inner thigh in all his moves until the end, won the battle, 4 - 0, for a second year in a row. Like in Representative Matsushima’s overall evaluation, these two may possibly enter the World Cup tournament and I wish them to train harder so they can possess passable World Cup skills.
